Caltrans work on closed section of Highway 1 near Big Sur includes installing dowels
Briefly

Caltrans is focusing on stabilizing Regent's Slide along Highway 1, where closures have been in effect since March 2024 due to landslides. They are currently installing shear dowels to reinforce the slope and prevent further slide activity. Remote-controlled equipment has improved excavation efficiency, enabling safer operations. Despite new ground movements detected, the shear dowels previously installed in nearby areas have proven effective, leading to continuous work around the clock to restore integrity and safety to this critical route along the Big Sur Coast.
The primary function of shear dowels is to reinforce the slope by increasing its internal shear strength, helping to resist landslide forces.
Caltrans introduced remote-controlled equipment for use at Regent's Slide, enhancing excavation productivity amidst challenging terrain.
