The Berkeley City Council is considering the implementation of parking fees at several popular lots along the waterfront in response to a $1.3 million budget deficit. Proposed fees are $1 per hour or $6 per day, with a $500 annual pass option, expected to generate $188,000 for the Marina Fund. Opposition arises from local residents, who worry that parking charges could disenfranchise visitors, especially as the nearby Doubletree Hotel has significantly impacted city revenues. A public hearing regarding the proposal is scheduled for Tuesday.
"Parking fees at this level don't generate any revenue, especially if you have different rules for each lot," said Kamen.
"I think it's too bad it might not stay free, but I also understand there are services the marina needs to keep it clean and friendly to everybody," said Harley.
