'Alysa Liu is Oakland': City plans celebration rally for Olympic win
"This rally is a celebration not just of an extraordinary champion, but of everything our community represents: grit, excellence, and the belief that Oakland always punches above its weight. Come out and celebrate one of our own."
"Alysa Liu is Oakland - her drive, her brilliance, her joy. Watching her claim gold for our city and our country filled every Oaklander with pride, and we are overjoyed to welcome her home."
"Liu's win for the women's individual figure skating title was the first win for the U.S. in the category since 2002. Oakland has buzzed since her victory. The historic ice cream parlor Fentons Creamery even offered the 20-year-old figure skater ice cream for life."
Oakland is organizing a free celebration rally on March 12 at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza to honor figure skater Alysa Liu's achievements at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Liu won gold in both the women's individual figure skating competition and the team event, marking the first U.S. women's individual figure skating gold since 2002. The event runs from noon to 1:30 p.m., with doors opening at 9 a.m. Free tickets are limited to two per person and available through Visit Oakland's registration. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee emphasized that the rally celebrates Liu's extraordinary accomplishments and the community values of grit and excellence. Local businesses, including historic Fentons Creamery, have also recognized Liu's historic victory.
