Alameda County committed roughly $10 million to local hunger-relief efforts, directing $8.3 million to the Alameda County Community Food Bank and $1.7 million to senior meal programs, with the Board set to reconvene Oct. 28 to ratify the allocation. The federal government shutdown that began Oct. 1 has disrupted CalFresh funding and risks delaying benefits in November for millions of Californians. Governor Gavin Newsom deployed the National Guard to support food banks and said additional state guidance will follow if the shutdown continues beyond November 2025. County officials estimate H.R.1 will cut about $70 million annually from local CalFresh allocations, and 179,000 county residents received CalFresh as of March 2025. Community organizations reported workers, seniors, and parents are facing severe food insecurity.
