AI drones to spot illegal dumping? Oakland is considering a pilot project
"Public works believes this technology will be incredibly helpful for deploying our Keep Oakland Clean and Beautiful crews to collect the waste. We believe it will make it easier for us to send the appropriate size of crew for the job, and route the crew on the most efficient path for collection."
"The AI can see what the eyes miss."
"The drones will fly about 120 to 150 feet in the air."
"The AI system doesn't use facial recognition or scan license plates. It also redacts private property by automatically placing a black box over people's yards and other non-public areas."
Oakland is set to approve a $150,000 deal with Aerbits for a six-month pilot program using AI-powered drones to detect illegal dumping. The drones will cover 1,440 miles of roads, scanning for trash piles. This technology aims to enhance efficiency in waste collection by allowing crews to be deployed more effectively. Current reporting systems have led to inequitable service, and drones can identify more dumping sites without the need for in-person checks. Privacy protections are in place to safeguard personal property.
