Highway 41, notorious for accidents and specifically the site of actor James Dean's fatal crash in 1955, will close for construction from June 9-13. This 20-mile stretch connects California's Central Valley to the Central Coast. Caltrans is implementing changes as part of the State Route 46 Corridor Improvement Project to enhance safety. The area has a grim history, with reports of numerous fatalities. Caltrans has established a detour route for the duration of the closure, with confidence that it will facilitate traffic during the construction period.
'The established detour is one we have used for various projects over the years and works well,' Shivers wrote SFGATE.
Caltrans has worked on making improvements to the dangerous highway with its State Route 46 Corridor Improvement Project, expanding the number of lanes and adding a new interchange.
A critical 20-mile section of Highway 41 that connects the Central Valley and the rest of California to the Central Coast... is slated to close for five days of construction.
While Dean is the road's most famous victim, he's not the only one. A 2002 San Francisco Chronicle story reported 54 people had died... at that spot.
