The government has been urged to adopt a more realistic approach regarding the financial requirements for infrastructure to support the rapid growth of data centres. ESB Networks has proposed a substantial increase in investment, seeking €13.4 billion by 2030, which marks a significant rise from the €4 billion allocated over the past five years. However, this increased funding may still fall short of addressing the heightened demands of the data centre sector, which is expanding at a rapid pace.
Electricity customers will have to help fund a quadrupling of investment in the power system over the next five years, yet it remains insufficient to support data centre growth.
