'Mayhem and chaos': Europe's airports demand urgent review of new border system
"mounting operational issues"
"additional flexibility"
"The progressive scaling‑up of the registration and capture of biometric data from third country nationals entering the Schengen area has resulted in border control processing times at airports increasing by up to 70 per cent, with waiting times of up to 3 hours at peak traffic periods"
Airport Council International Europe called for an urgent review of the EU Entry/Exit System amid operational problems that could affect the holiday season. If problems persist by January, additional flexibility will be needed in the roll-out. The EES is implemented across EU countries (except Cyprus and Ireland) and in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Travellers must register personal data and provide biometric information at the first Schengen border crossing using self-service kiosks and border guard checks. Data will be held in an EU-wide digital database to replace passport stamping and help identify overstayers or security issues. IT infrastructure problems delayed launch and prompted a staggered six-month roll-out; significant airport queues and longer processing times have followed.
