EU reveals (latest) start date for EES biometric passport checks
Briefly

The European Commission has announced that the Entry & Exit System (EES) will start on October 12th, 2025, following several delays. The system will be phased in, becoming mandatory at all EU/Schengen borders by April 2026. EES enhances border security with biometric checks and records travelers' entry and exit dates for non-EU citizens. It targets non-EU passport holders, while exemptions exist for non-EU citizens who reside in the EU. The ETIAS travel authorization will follow in late 2026 with a fee increase to €20.
The Entry & Exit System (EES) will come into effect on October 12th, 2025, and will be phased in gradually across the EU/Schengen zone.
The EES aims to enhance border security through tougher passport controls while digitizing entry and exit dates to manage the 90-day allowance for visa-free travel.
The ETIAS travel authorisation is set to be introduced in the final quarter of 2026, with an increased fee of €20.
Only non-EU passport holders need to use the EES, while exemptions apply to non-EU citizens residing in the EU.
