Bernard Hinault, a five-time Tour de France winner, believes no French rider can currently win the Tour. He feels French cyclists have not been up to the task since his last victory in 1985. Despite facing significant challenges during his career, he expresses disappointment over the absence of new champions in France. Hinault also shared that his goal in racing was to enjoy the experience, rather than focusing on breaking records. He pointed out that current French riders lack the prowess needed to win the prestigious race.
"French riders had always won the race at regular intervals up till then. It's a terrible observation to make, but it's one you can't avoid. There are [currently] no grand champions in France who are capable of winning the Tour."
"I would happily not have this record," Hinault told about being the last French rider to win the Tour, adding that at the time, he wouldn't have 'bet a centime' on the chances of that happening.
"We don't have that big, 1000cc motorbike that can make a difference, just the 750cc model. I'm sure they do everything they can to get there, but they don't have the results and above all they have no chance of winning the Tour."
Hinault expressed that attempts to equal his five Tour victories are not a priority for him, as he approached the race with an attitude of enjoyment rather than viewing it as work.
