Voice-recognition technology often fails to accurately recognize Black speech due to inadequate representation in training data. Lucretia Williams leads Project Elevate Black Voices, a partnership between Howard University and Google, focused on enhancing how voice-driven AI interprets African American English. Leading to communication challenges, such tools often misinterpret commands, showing significant error gaps favoring white users. By engaging over 530 African Americans in the research, the project aims to create a more effective and inclusive understanding of diverse speech patterns.
Williams and her team are leading an effort to improve voice-recognition technology's understanding of Black voices through the partnership Project Elevate Black Voices.
The project addresses the historical underrepresentation of Black speech in datasets, which results in higher error rates for Black users in voice-interpretation systems.
