Sun Moon Studio in West Oakland recently won its first Michelin star. Sarah Cooper and Alan Hsu opened the tiny fine-dining restaurant last year in an industrial part of West Oakland. The 12- to 14-course menu pairs playful, seasonal compositions such as housemade water kimchi with halibut crudo, puffed buckwheat and kumquat, and lap cheong tucked into steamed brioche. Verjus in Jackson Square reopened last fall after a pandemic closure and revival by Michael and Lindsay Tusk. The candle-lit wine bar serves French bistro classics including steak au poivre and omelette Boursin. Additional California inclusions include Baby Bistro, Mori Nozomi, RVR, and Carlsbad’s Lilo.
