Erin Patterson, a 50-year-old mother from Leongatha, Australia, is facing trial for allegedly poisoning several of her estranged husband's relatives during a July 2023 lunch. She reportedly served them a beef Wellington dish containing deadly death cap mushrooms, which led to three fatalities and severe health issues for others. The prosecution claims Patterson used a false cancer diagnosis as a pretext for inviting her guests. Despite the serious charges of murder and attempted murder, she maintains her innocence and asserts that she consumed the meal too and became ill, albeit less severely than others.
You do not have to be satisfied what the motive was or even that there was one. The prosecution will not be suggesting that there was a particular motive to do what she did.
The defense case is that she didn't intend to cause anyone any harm on that day.
