"enabling people to store their driving licence on their phone, making it easier and faster to prove who you are and your driving entitlements"
"This was the culmination of the team's efforts in building, stress-testing, designing, iterating, as well as speaking to users, all done through partnership with the DVLA,"
"rolled out more widely"
The UK government is testing a mobile app-based digital driving licence to be stored in the Gov.uk One Login digital wallet. The plan announced in January aimed to provide digital credentials for driving entitlements and online age verification, but the original end-2024 timeline slipped. Testing began in December via a private trial with Government Digital Service and DVLA staff. GDS said the licence will be rolled out more widely later this year and described the app as enabling people to store licences on phones to make proving identity and driving entitlements faster. The Veteran Card was the first credential and over 15,000 veterans added it. Other departments are being encouraged to adopt digital credentials. Private sector identity providers raised competition concerns that were addressed in meetings with ministers.
