Release your lantern
"One of the festival's most iconic traditions is the release of sky lanterns (天燈), especially in Pingxi (平溪) in New Taipei City. As evening falls, thousands of glowing lanterns drift into the night sky, each inscribed with handwritten wishes for the year ahead."
"I hope next year they turn this into a community interactive that shows everyone's lanterns and hopes floating around. A decade and a half ago, there used to be a site called 43 Things where people listed their goals in life... It was calming to watch so much hope move across the screen."
Sky lanterns represent a cherished lunar new year tradition, particularly in Pingxi, New Taipei City, where thousands of glowing lanterns inscribed with wishes drift skyward each evening. The lanterns carry cultural significance, with designs reflecting zodiac animals and their associated qualities. Taiwan Data Stories developed an interactive experience enabling people to customize and virtually release their own lanterns. The creator envisions expanding this into a community-based interactive displaying all participants' lanterns and wishes floating together, drawing inspiration from similar projects like the goal-sharing site 43 Things, which created a meditative experience by visualizing collective human aspirations moving across the screen.
