The Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) project has successfully integrated its all photonic network (APN) in 5G radio access networks, enhancing mobile fronthaul operations. Spearheaded by NTT and supported by major tech companies, the initiative aims to sustainably address soaring data demands and energy consumption associated with AI and LLM applications. The IOWN infrastructure uses end-to-end optical connections to ensure high-capacity, low-latency communications without needing to convert signals from optical to electrical, thereby improving power efficiency amidst increasing mobile traffic and the emergence of 6G networks.
The IOWN all photonic network has successfully demonstrated dynamic rerouting for 5G mobile fronthaul, aiming to meet the hyper-connected world's growing data demands.
With 5G's rapid growth, base stations face increased power consumption, and IOWN's focus on improving power efficiency is critical for sustainable mobile network development.
