Motorists will no longer have to display tax and insurance discs on windscreen once new bill passes

The National Vehicle and Driver File Bill aims to remove the requirement for physical motor tax discs, utilizing enhanced data sharing and Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology. This change, according to Minister Seán Canney, will streamline processes for motorists, aligning with practices in several European countries. The bill is in the drafting stage and will also work towards allowing drivers to store their licenses digitally. The legislation acknowledges that many motorists are unaware of the current legal requirements regarding carrying physical documentation while driving.
