"From my perspective, these announcements are about two things. They're about forestalling legislation that Meta doesn't want to see, and they're about reassuring parents who are understandably concerned about what's happening on Instagram,"
Meta will add parental controls allowing parents to turn off one-on-one AI character chats or block specific chatbots, with rollout beginning early next year. Meta's AI assistant will remain available to offer helpful information and educational opportunities with default, age-appropriate protections for teens. Parents will receive limited "insights" about what their children chat with AI characters but will not get access to full chat logs. The changes follow criticism and legal scrutiny over harms to children and AI interactions. A Common Sense Media study found over 70% of teens have used AI companions, and half use them regularly. Instagram teen accounts will default to PG-13 content and require parental permission to change.
