Mark Zuckerberg totally ignored my suggestion on how to improve Facebook Marketplace
"The default opening message - usually "Hi, is this available?" - drives sellers up the wall. Updates include being able to post comments on items for sale and AI-generated follow-up questions. Mark Zuckerberg, you have disappointed me yet again. I am broken, lying in the gutter, feeling lower than Yann LeCun when he had to start reporting to Alexandr Wang."
"I have begged, pleaded, screamed (OK, blogged one time) about my most sincere wish for Facebook Marketplace ( the only good part about Facebook). The default message - "Hi, is this available?" - drives sellers nuts. Sure, to you, a billionaire who is unlikely to have recently purchased a used lamp, this sounds like a reasonable opening line. But trust me, everyone hates it."
Facebook Marketplace is adding the ability to post comments on listings and will offer AI-suggested follow-up messages. The platform's default initial buyer message remains "Hi, is this available?", which many sellers find repetitive, unhelpful, and time-wasting. Sellers report receiving numerous identical inquiries on urgent or free listings, making it difficult to identify serious buyers. Owners of expensive or niche items often get particularly frustrated and sometimes include "DO NOT ASK ME IF IT'S AVAILABLE!!" in descriptions. Meta's large AI investment could address this UX issue, but current AI support applies only to follow-ups rather than replacing the opening message.
