More than 6,000 new words have been added to the Cambridge Dictionary, reflecting the evolving English language influenced by internet culture. Popular terms include "skibidi," defined as a versatile word often used jokingly, and "tradwife," derived from a traditional lifestyle focused on domestic roles. New additions also encompass phrases like "delulu" for "delusional" and terms related to remote work, such as "mouse jiggler," which helps simulate productivity. The dictionary emphasizes the permanence of these words in the language.
Skibidi is defined by the Cambridge dictionary as, "a word that can have different meanings such as 'cool' or 'bad,' or can be used with no real meaning as a joke."
The term tradwife, which comes from 'traditional wife,' became popular online, especially after the internet saw a boom of creators promoting a 'traditional' lifestyle with content including childcare, cooking and cleaning.
The word Skibidi saw popularity through a series of YouTube videos. The first video alone has over 60 million views.
We only add words where we think they will live on; Collins Dictionary has referred to this as capturing the lexicon of the culture.
