Chile, Google sign first-of-its-kind deal for undersea cable DW 06/05/2025
Briefly

Chile and Google have signed an agreement to install the Humboldt Project, the first submarine fiber optic cable linking South America with Asia and Oceania by 2027. Stretching 14,800 kilometers (9,200 miles) from Valparaiso, Chile, to Sydney, Australia, this cable is expected to enhance digital connectivity and offer a faster alternative to existing routes. It will accommodate various technology companies, not just Google, and is anticipated to significantly improve telemedicine by reducing signal transmission times. Both entities have invested heavily in the project, which aims to reshape international data routes.
The new submarine fiber optic cable, known as the "Humboldt Project," will enhance digital connectivity by linking South America directly to Asia and Oceania.
Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren emphasized that the cable symbolizes resilience and the diversification of digital routes, while fostering international collaboration.
