Broadband Grows, but the Digital Divide Remains: Study
Briefly

The Ookla Speedtest Intelligence study shows that while many states saw significant improvements in broadband access in 2024, the digital divide actually worsened in several locations. A key factor was the conclusion of the Affordable Connectivity Program, which deprived millions of users of essential broadband access. Despite a record 10.3 million homes gained fiber access, with 22 states meeting FCC standards for broadband speeds, the overall improvements were uneven, with rural areas being left behind even as urban areas advanced.
"With so much attention and funding being directed toward eliminating the digital divide, it's disheartening to see the divide growing in some states, particularly as the overall percentage of Speedtest users getting speeds of 100/20 Mbps grows."
"It appears that many recent broadband investments are resulting in better urban broadband coverage rather than closing the gap in rural areas."
