AWS says only Europeans will run its European Sovereign Cloud service
Briefly

AWS is establishing a European Sovereign Cloud controlled solely by EU citizens, ensuring operations adhere to EU laws. This cloud will be independently operated with strong technical and legal safeguards, having no reliance on non-EU infrastructure. The company is revising its hiring practices to require EU citizenship for employees involved in its operation. A €7.8 billion investment is planned through 2040, with the launch aimed for the end of this year to address security fears over data sovereignty in light of existing regulations like the US Cloud Act.
"The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is designed to provide customers with an autonomous cloud that operates independently in Europe and for Europe," the company said in a statement.
AWS said it's on track to launch the AWS European Sovereign Cloud by the end of this year, backed by a €7.8 billion investment through 2040.
As part of the shift, EU citizenship is to be added to the company's hiring requirements for AWS employees operating the cloud.
