Starting March 28, Amazon Echo models like Echo Dot (4th Gen) and Echo Show devices will cease local processing of Alexa requests, shifting to cloud-based recording. This change results from Amazon's push to enhance Alexa with generative AI features that depend on cloud processing power. Users who previously opted to not send voice recordings will find their settings automatically adjusted to 'Don't save recordings,' which raises privacy concerns. Additionally, any prior voice recordings will also be deleted, as confirmed by an email from Amazon following a public post on Reddit.
As we continue to expand Alexa's capabilities with generative AI features that rely on the processing power of Amazon's secure cloud, we have decided to no longer support this feature.
The move comes a few weeks after Amazon introduced Alexa+, which brings generative AI to the assistant.
