SUSE underestimated demand for VMware alternative, CEO admits
""We've realized that [a VMware alternative] is a big deal," says Van Leeuwen. His company is "maybe late, but we are ready to offer solutions for those looking to modernize beyond legacy systems.""
""For me, this was the most natural opportunity for our layered strategy," said Van Leeuwen, referring to the emergence of OpenELA to support RHEL-compatible distributions."
SUSE CEO Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen recognized the company's initial underestimation of the demand for migrations from VMware. The focus shifted to Red Hat's licensing changes and the development of Rancher. By 2026, SUSE aims to provide migration paths for those modernizing beyond legacy systems. Despite not being a direct alternative to VMware, SUSE is responding to the changing landscape caused by Broadcom's acquisition of VMware. The CEO admits that many users still plan to leave VMware but have not yet transitioned.
