The article discusses how OpenTelemetry faced challenges in supporting Arm64 architecture due to a lack of formal support for these deployments. As Arm64 servers gained popularity for their performance and efficiency, it became crucial for observability tools to adapt. Ampere Computing contributed servers to aid the OpenTelemetry team in retrofitting their code for Arm64. With the help of Actuated for CI/CD support, OpenTelemetry successfully tested and built pipelines for both Arm64 and x86 architectures, moving toward parity in support.
"Ampere gave us a leg up to understand how to best instrument the code, and run it in that setup," remarked Antoine Toulmé, who maintains the OpenTelemetry Collector project while serving as a senior engineering manager at Splunk.
"It was an interesting experience because it's really powerful hardware."
