"We planned the new head office for Uchida Shoten, a hardware manufacturer established 160 years ago in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture."
"The surrounding area flourished as Fujisawa-juku, the sixth post town along the Tokaido road during the Edo period, a town lined with inns, teahouses, and merchants."
"Traces of this history remain in places, and the site itself is characterised by its narrow, elongated townhouse-style plot."
A new head office was planned for Uchida Shoten, a hardware manufacturer established 160 years ago in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The surrounding area flourished as Fujisawa-juku, the sixth post town along the Tokaido road during the Edo period, characterized by inns, teahouses, and merchants. Physical traces of that commercial and hospitality heritage remain in parts of the neighborhood. The building site is a narrow, elongated townhouse-style plot that constrains program and form. The project addresses both the historical urban fabric and the tight, linear site conditions, integrating contemporary office functions while acknowledging local morphology and surviving historical cues.
