The site is located along the coast of the Chaoshan region in Guangdong Province, China,"
"an area characterized by distinct local customs, languages, and social practices. Since 2015, the surrounding area has undergone rapid transformation from farmland and villages into a resort-oriented development. Despite this shift, local villagers continue to access and use the beach daily, resulting in a shared environment occupied by residents, workers, and visitors. This condition informed the project's aim to operate as a flexible public space that supports varied forms of use."
The Beach Temporary Theater was an 18-day outdoor installation for Midsummer 2025, commissioned by KwanTeo and designed to host film, music, a stage, exhibition areas, and a public garden. The site lies on the Chaoshan coast in Guangdong Province, where development since 2015 transformed farmland and villages into resorts while local villagers continue daily beach use, creating a shared environment of residents, workers, and visitors. Field research identified traditional temporary bamboo sheds used for ceremonies; these lightweight, reusable structures informed material choice and construction methods. Bamboo became the primary material and local villagers experienced in the method were invited to build. Vernacular principles of stilted forms, open frameworks, and clustered arrangements were reinterpreted for a flexible coastal public space.
