'it shouldn't be hyper-formal': inside the convivial luxury of the ritz-carlton new york, NoMad
"The outskirts of Manhattan's Flower District are feeling especially alive lately as the Ritz-Carlton New York settles into its new home at the corner of Broadway and 28th Street. Flower shops along the block open early, filling the sidewalks with fragrance as workers move pallets of roses and eucalyptus. While the corner is within sight of the ornamental Flatiron building, the atmosphere has a more workaday character with its shifting mix of residents and visitors."
"Their approach brings an atmosphere that's opulent and still welcoming to both guests and locals. Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos, president and COO of Flag Luxury Group, describes this vision as guided by conviviality and a commitment to the community. She explains that the hotel's public spaces were conceived for true public use: ' I don't believe in velvet ropes. I believe in just being welcoming to all of our guests and our neighbors.'"
The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad occupies a corner at Broadway and 28th Street adjacent to Manhattan's Flower District, where early flower shops fill sidewalks with roses and eucalyptus. The hotel is housed in a 2018-built tower by Rafael Viñoly developed through an interior-first process to accommodate a vertical hotel on a compact footprint. Interiors were shaped by Viñoly, Rockwell Group, and multiple design teams to create spaces that are opulent yet welcoming to guests and locals. Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos emphasizes conviviality, community commitment, and public-use spaces, rejecting exclusive barriers in favor of openness to neighbors and visitors. Collaborative sessions carved each area to meet programmatic needs.
