Fire-Resilient, Fast, and Beautiful: Marmol Radziner's Prefab Solution for LA
"When Marmol Radziner started receiving calls from families who had lost their homes to the LA wildfires, they wanted to help. New homes needed to be built, and victims were overwhelmed. "Most people plan for years when building their own homes, but this tragedy thrust people into a situation they were not planning for," says Jared Levy, Senior Project Manager at the AD100 firm. "It made sense for us to develop a prefab solution.""
"Everything is built using fire-resilient materials: noncombustible metal siding, Class A fire-resistant membrane roofing, and dual-pane aluminum windows with tempered glazing. The firm is also developing automated shutters that will close to protect homes during a fire. "Anything that gives additional time to help a home withstand flames," says Levy. The biggest advantage is getting families back into their own homes as quickly as possible. "The efficiency in the construction process can shorten the construction schedule by 40% to 50%," says Levy."
Marmol Radziner created a prefab program to help LA wildfire victims rebuild quickly, offering four readymade designs plus an accessory dwelling unit sized for 40- to 50-foot lots. The designs aim to retain the firm's craftsmanship and warmth while using fire-resilient materials such as noncombustible metal siding, Class A fire-resistant membrane roofing, and dual-pane aluminum windows with tempered glazing. The firm is developing automated shutters to protect homes during fires. The prefab method can shorten construction schedules by 40–50 percent and targets pricing near $800 per square foot, compared with $1,000-plus for custom homes.
