F5: Jason Roskey on Baja Sur, a Welsh Chair, Sprinter Van + More
"I didn't know I could pursue a creative life and career. I spent years doing business-type things to make a living. It wasn't until I moved to New York that I really began discovering furniture and interiors."
"I am always sketching and designing in multiple ways. Often when I have a very pressing idea I will design directly on the bench, working through templates for different shapes."
"The studio now offers lighting, which is a natural complement to the sculptural tables and chairs. Fiberglass and hand-laced goat parchment on select fixtures are paired with bases of cast aluminum, blackened steel, and sand-cast bronze."
Jason Roskey grew up in Texas, inspired by art and architecture. He initially pursued a business career until moving to New York, where he discovered furniture design. As a self-taught woodworker, he founded Fern in 2009, operating from Hudson, New York. The studio produces custom furniture and recently expanded to include lighting. Roskey designs each item, fabricating them in-house with a skilled team. He continuously refines his designs, often sketching directly on the bench to develop new ideas and shapes.
