Open Austin: Reimagining Civic Engagement and Digital Equity in Texas

Open Austin began in 2009 as a meetup and relaunched as a 501(c)3 in 2018 focused on civic engagement and digital equity through volunteer open source projects. The organization has provided hands-on training for over 1,500 members in technical and interpersonal skills to build digital society. The Civic Digital Lab trains local residents to build technology for the public good and supports five products including a Data Research Hub, library UX improvements, rental property mapping, transit promotion, and police bodycam exploration. The Data Research Hub started in January 2025 and gathers residents' questions to be answered by data analysts, building a knowledge pool to help communities address local issues. The Electronic Frontier Alliance has welcomed Open Austin.
