The Cowboys have had mixed results using the franchise tag " Inside The Star
"So, dating all the way back to 2002, when they first used the tag on Adams, this team has had mixed results when using it. Sometimes it went their way, and sometimes it did not. So just a quick recap of who they have used the tag on since 2002, like I noted Flozell Adams was the first player they placed it on, followed by Ken Hamlin in 2008, Anthony Spencer twice in 2012 & 13."
"The Cowboys placed the franchise tag on him in March 2023, costing them $10.1 million. Pollard responded with another 1,000-yard season, though his per-carry average showed a significant drop-off. The tag did not result in anything longer than one extra year; Pollard signed with the Tennessee Titans in early 2024."
"With the NFL setting the 2026 salary cap set, the non-exclusive franchise tag for George Pickens will cost $27.298 million."
The Dallas Cowboys first implemented the franchise tag in 2002 on Flozell Adams, nine years after the NFL introduced it. Since then, the team has applied the tag 13 times across various players including Ken Hamlin, Anthony Spencer, Dez Bryant, DeMarcus Lawrence, Dak Prescott, Dalton Schultz, Tony Pollard, and most recently George Pickens in 2026 at $27.298 million. The results have been inconsistent. Tony Pollard, tagged in 2023 for $10.1 million, achieved another 1,000-yard season but left for Tennessee in 2024. Dak Prescott's 2020 tag proved fortunate despite his leg injury. The franchise tag strategy has produced both successful contract negotiations and departures to other teams.
