Sources: Cowboys rework Prescott, Lamb, Smith deals, now under cap
"I want you to know that the only way to push more [out] is for me to go borrow some of my future, OK? Expect me to go borrow some of my future. I would bet that we will spend more money in free agency than we have."
"The Cowboys have not been major players in free agency in more than a decade, choosing to fill holes with cost-effective moves. Jones coined the phrase, 'bust the budget,' when the offseason began and said from Indianapolis he would be willing to do so to help fix a defense that finished last in yards and 30th in points per game."
The Dallas Cowboys restructured contracts for quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and left guard Tyler Smith to get under the $301.2 million salary cap, clearing approximately $66 million in cap space. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones plans to restructure defensive tackles Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, and Osa Odighizuwa to create additional room. Jones committed to aggressive free agency spending, stating the team will "borrow from the future" to address defensive needs. The Cowboys finished last in yards allowed and 30th in points per game, requiring improvements at linebacker, cornerback, safety, and pass rusher positions. The team has two first-round picks but lacks second and third-round selections due to previous trades.
