Despite a significant overall decline in illegal border crossings, smugglers are adapting by shifting to remote areas of Texas, where surveillance is lax. Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland noted a rise in migrant activity, with groups attempting to traverse the mountainous desert despite perilous conditions lacking food and water. While there have been recent upticks in crossings, the numbers remain significantly lower than during the Biden administration. The change in tactics reflects desperate measures by traffickers as they seek alternative routes amid tightening border control.
"They aren't seeking political relief." Cleveland pointed out the shift in migrant intentions as they increasingly attempt to cross undetected.
"Up until now we were slowing down, I think as the year progresses more activity will move out here because it's wide open spaces." Sheriff Cleveland indicating the remote areas witnessing an uptick in migrant activity.
"Crossing the border here is more dangerous than crowded areas like El Paso and McAllen because there is no food or water available..." Cleveland highlighted the dangers faced by migrants in remote areas.
"Meanwhile, across the entire southern border, Border Patrol recorded just 7,100 illegal crossings last month, the lowest level on record since Trump ended the problematic 'catch and release' policy of the Biden administration." Sacrificing illegal crossings is significant compared to previous migrant influx.
