Jerry Jones, Brian Schottenheimer discuss traits for a new defensive coordinator
"Following an opening monologue from Jerry Jones, the questions began and DLLS' Clarence Hill Jr. asked Jerry directly who would be in charge of hiring the new defensive coordinator. Much is often said about how Jerry Jones runs the Cowboys and it is believed that he preferred Matt Eberflus (these are theories that people posit and nothing that has ever been confirmed to be clear) was a hire that the Joneses made as opposed to head coach Brian Schottenheimer."
"Schotty also noted that the Cowboys were looking for a "teacher" at the position and would not answer any type of specific scheme that they were looking for from a philosophical standpoint. He noted that the Cowboys want coaches who are flexible and who can figure things out with their players, honestly everything he had to say on the subject was fantastic to hear."
"Jerry took a second and noted that Schottenheimer had everything to do with the Eberflus hire, even though he made clear that he is the final decision-maker on Cowboys moves. He basically reiterated the same line that they are all involved but Jerry makes the final decisions."
The Cowboys closed out the 2025 season with a press conference that focused in part on the dismissal of Matt Eberflus. Questions centered on who will hire the next defensive coordinator and the role of Jerry Jones and Brian Schottenheimer in that decision. Jerry Jones affirmed that Schottenheimer was involved in the Eberflus hire but reiterated that Jones is the final decision-maker on team moves. Brian Schottenheimer emphasized the need to generate more turnovers and said the team wants a defensive coordinator who is a "teacher," flexible, and able to adapt schemes to players.
