'Dak loves him, trusts him': Jake Ferguson is off to a historic start, and it's no fluke
"Through the first five games of any season in NFL history, no tight end has had more than the 41 receptions Jake Ferguson has for the Dallas Cowboys. Two others had 41: Eric Johnson with the San Francisco 49ers in 2004 and Zach Ertz with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018. Ferguson has had at least five catches in each of the first five games."
"Ferguson signed a four-year extension worth $52 million during training camp, tying him to the organization through 2029 and perhaps for the rest of 32-year-old Dak Prescott's career. Since Prescott took over as the Cowboys' starting quarterback in 2016, Cowboys tight ends have caught at least 60 passes seven times in the nine seasons he has played the majority of the games. He learned quickly how friendly a tight end can be for a quarterback."
Jake Ferguson has 41 receptions through five games, the most ever by a tight end in NFL history. Two other tight ends reached 41 receptions through five games: Eric Johnson (49ers, 2004) and Zach Ertz (Eagles, 2018). Ferguson has recorded at least five catches in each of the first five games, a pace matched for the Cowboys only by Jason Witten in 2008. Only Rams receiver Puka Nacua has more receptions leaguewide (52). Ferguson signed a four-year, $52 million extension through 2029, and Dak Prescott credits tight-end fundamentals and Ferguson's reliability for his success.
