BGE has successfully completed the first underground fiber optic communications route as part of its middle-mile project in Howard County, Maryland. This milestone, backed by a $15.4 million grant from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, aims to modernize BGE's communications infrastructure, improve the electric grid's reliability and security, and extend digital equity in communities. The initiative reflects BGE's commitment to innovation in utility practices, improving energy infrastructure resilience while empowering communities through better connectivity and data capabilities.
This milestone represents more than just fiber in the ground - it's about the lives we can touch and the communities we can empower, said Sonya Harbaugh, director of Strategy at BGE.
We’re creating a future where our infrastructure not only powers homes and businesses, but also powers opportunity, added Harbaugh.
