Mexico and the EU Join Forces to Target Global Crypto Money Laundering
Mexico and the EU will collaborate to curb global crypto money laundering after securing a 5B investment deal. Talks will focus on targeting criminal groups such as the Sinaloa Cartel, which uses crypto flows to launder money across jurisdictions. Mexico’s foreign minister and the European Commission vice-president said both sides are examining ways to cooperate to reduce crypto money laundering activities. The governments also plan to maintain dialogue and explore cooperation opportunities to confront crypto-related illicit threats. The collaboration is relevant because the Sinaloa Cartel has activities in Europe, including cases involving methamphetamine production and distribution that used cryptocurrency for illegal transactions. States are increasing vigilance and exchanging information on these financial flows.
"“Concerning security cooperation between Mexico and the European Union, we have discussed today how criminal organizations are conducting activities on a global scale such as money laundering and, of course, matters related to the use of cryptocurrencies for these types of illicit activities.”"
"“Furthermore, he indicated that the two parties intended to maintain a dialogue and explore opportunities for cooperation to confront these threats and activities.”"
"“The announcement was made during a press conference at the 8th Mexico-EU Summit, where Mexico's President, Claudia Sheimbaum, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, signed a trade agreement that encompasses a 5 billion investment in Mexico.”"
"“Mexico's and the EU's collaboration is relevant, given that the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the largest drug trafficking organizations in the western hemisphere, has activities in Europe. In May 2025, Europol and the French National Gendarmerie dismantled an organization that produced and distributed methamphetamine with the coordination and help of the Sinaloa cartel. The group also operated using cryptocurrency to facilitate their illegal financial transactions.”"
