Citi Wants To Bring Bitcoin Into Traditional Finance
"Later this year, Citi will be launching our infrastructure that integrates Bitcoin into traditional finance. We're starting with core custody and safekeeping capabilities, institutional-grade key management, and wallet infrastructure. The rollout will allow clients to manage Bitcoin positions alongside traditional assets."
"Clients will not need to manage wallets, private keys, or one-time addresses, as Citi will handle those processes through its infrastructure. The bank plans to extend the same reporting channels, tax workflows, and compliance frameworks currently used for traditional assets to Bitcoin holdings."
Citi is developing infrastructure to integrate Bitcoin into traditional financial systems through a three-pronged approach. Nisha Surendran, head of digital asset custody development, announced the bank will launch core custody and safekeeping capabilities, institutional-grade key management, and wallet infrastructure later in 2026. The initiative aims to make Bitcoin bankable by allowing clients to manage cryptocurrency positions alongside traditional assets within Citi's existing reporting, tax, and compliance frameworks. Clients will not need to manage private keys or wallets directly, as Citi will handle these processes. The bank manages approximately $30 trillion in client assets and plans to extend its current systems to Bitcoin holdings.
