Uganda declares end to latest Ebola outbreak
Briefly

Uganda has officially ended its latest Ebola outbreak, first reported after a male nurse's death on January 30. The Ministry of Health confirmed no new infections for 42 days since the last patient was discharged. During this outbreak, there were 14 reported cases, with four deaths occurring. WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus praised Uganda's Health Ministry for their effective response. Uganda continues to be vulnerable to future outbreaks due to its history with the virus, particularly the Sudan strain, which currently lacks an approved vaccine.
The Ministry of Health announced the milestone on Saturday via its official X account, calling it good news and confirming that 42 days had passed without new infections.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus applauded the Ugandan Health Ministry for its leadership and commitment in overcoming the outbreak.
The latest outbreak began in Kampala, a bustling city of four million people and a key transit hub linking eastern DRC, Kenya, Rwanda and South Sudan.
Ebola infections are frequent in Uganda which has many tropical forests that are natural reservoirs for the virus.
