An explosion and fire erupted onboard the Singapore-flagged MV Wan Hai 503 off the coast of Kerala. 18 of the 22 crew members were rescued with the help of the Indian Navy, while four remain missing, including two Taiwanese crew. The navy has initiated a search operation, deploying aircraft and vessels to manage firefighting efforts and investigate the situation. The exact cause of the explosion is still unknown. Authorities continue to assess the potential environmental risks and cargo details, maintaining high alert along Kerala's coast due to previous maritime incidents.
The vessel is presently adrift, and firefighting efforts have commenced to bring the situation under control, said Uniyal.
Saving lives of the crew in distress, firefighting and mitigating environmental hazard remains the priority for coastguard.
