The new COVID-19 subvariant referred to as Nimbus is spreading rapidly in California, with reports of it being linked to severe throat pain described as 'razor blade throat.' This symptom has gained attention as other traditional COVID symptoms like loss of taste have diminished in prominence. Nimbus has now become one of the leading subvariants, constituting a considerable portion of the virus strains in circulation, and it has risen sharply from just 2% of cases to 55% in California since April. Experts emphasize the need for continued monitoring.
"Before Omicron, I think most people presented with the usual loss of taste and smell as the predominant symptom and shortness of breath," said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong.
"The Nimbus subvariant is now one of the most dominant coronavirus subvariants nationally, comprising an estimated 37% of the nation's coronavirus samples for the two-week period that ended June 7."
