3 Canadians isolating in Ontario, Quebec after hantavirus ship outbreak | CBC News
"Given the incubation period of the Andes virus, which can be up to six weeks, it's possible that more cases may be reported. The World Health Organization said Thursday it has received reports of eight cases, including three deaths, in connection to the MV Hondius outbreak of the rodent-borne Andes virus, the only hantavirus known to be capable of limited transmission between humans."
"Quebec's health minister said that third Canadian, from Quebec, is isolating because they possibly came into contact during an international trip with a person infected with hantavirus. However, a statement from the minister says they were not in close proximity, and the risk of transmission is therefore extremely low."
A hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has resulted in eight confirmed cases and three deaths, according to the World Health Organization. Two Canadian passengers disembarked at St. Helena nearly two weeks ago, and a third Canadian who traveled with them is isolating after possible exposure to an infected person during international travel, though officials state the transmission risk is extremely low. Four additional Canadians remain aboard the ship, which is heading to the Canary Islands for passenger disembarkation. All affected Canadians are currently asymptomatic and self-isolating. The Andes virus strain involved is the only hantavirus capable of limited human-to-human transmission, with an incubation period up to six weeks, meaning additional cases may emerge.
