"After five wonderful years of serving the Fruitvale District, we will be closing our Red Bay HQ Café in the Fruitvale at the end of November."
"Overall, we're downsizing to fit. People just don't seem to be coming out like they used to here in Oakland. We don't need the offices anymore, and our roastery is just down the road."
"It used to hold a special place in the community's heart because you can go in there and watch the coffee being roasted. We'll continue that model and make a sidewalk hang space with a little parklet and some benches."
Red Bay Coffee will close its Fruitvale headquarters on November 30, ending cafe and office operations at the three-story former bank at 3136 International Blvd. The 2021 space included a coffee lab, design studio, community event space and corporate offices. Most staff now work remotely and the lease was not renewed. Cafe service will relocate to the roastery three blocks away at 3098 E. 10th St., with service starting December 1 and a planned sidewalk hang space with a parklet. The company filed Chapter 11 in September 2024 with over $3.3 million in debt, citing pandemic losses and costs from two lawsuits, including one alleging sexual harassment.
