Las Perras Cafe Makes Space for Culture and Change in Houston
""My space is a place for activism. My space is a place for women of color to feel safe," Arana told Daily Coffee News. "It's a place for the Latino community to feel seen and represented, and just a safe space for anybody.""
""When I go to other coffee shops, it definitely gives the vibe of like, 'how can we fit as many chairs in here as possible,' and obviously that makes economic sense. But my long-term goal is to turn my cafe into a furniture store and cafe,""
Las Perras Café in Houston's Second Ward operates as both a brick-and-mortar cafe and an extension of a bottled cold brew line that honors female change-makers. The space is airy and plant-filled, intentionally designed to evoke a Mexican living room that feels wholesome, cheerful and rooted in tradition. The menu pairs seasonal offerings—pumpkin-cheesecake cold brew and apple pie or pumpkin pie cold brew lattes—with espresso, matcha and inventive drinks like an aerated espresso mixed with elderflower and jasmine, topped with peach oolong tea. Fixtures and furnishings are built from reclaimed Mexican mesquite wood crafted by the founder's father, with plans to merge cafe and furniture retail.
