"Neighbors kept repeating, 'We're so excited for you to come, but Patticakes was the place where we got coffee, but we're really bummed to lose that little coffee corner.' Following community feedback, Fishman set out to find a coffee vendor to operate out of Prime Pizza; Altadena Beverage Market's owners, Kate and Adam Vourvoulis, recommended Mejia."
"When the Eaton Fire burned through Altadena in January 2025 - displacing thousands of residents, including Fishman, and destroying businesses such as Cafe de Leche and Side Pie - Prime Pizza's building remained standing. Although Mejia's kiosk and commercial espresso machine were not damaged in the fire, he estimates that he lost 70 percent of his customer base and was forced to close for two months."
"Bevel's new home is set in a light-filled 600-square-foot former photography studio with a front wall made almost entirely of windows and both indoor and outdoor seating. At the cafe, Mejia uses beans sourced mainly from Honduras and roasted in Monrovia."
Bevel Coffee, founded by Kevin Mejia in 2023 as a pop-up, opens as a permanent cafe in Altadena on February 28. Operating from Prime Pizza's kiosk for nearly three years, the cafe relocates to a charming 600-square-foot former photography studio across the street. The Eaton Fire in January 2025 devastated Altadena, destroying businesses and displacing residents, including Prime Pizza owner Zak Fishman. Though Bevel's equipment survived, Mejia lost 70 percent of his customer base and closed for two months. Using fire recovery loans and grants, he built the new permanent location. The cafe features large windows, indoor and outdoor seating, and serves specialty drinks using beans primarily sourced from Honduras and roasted locally in Monrovia.
