The Best Spirits Bottles of the Year
"Garryana 10 was preceded by three editions that traded nuance for largesse - for this vatting every subtlety was saved. The Garry oak notes stretch out yet retain their complexity, a character only possible after 10 years in cask."
"I reimagined crème brûlée in whisky form with Brûlée Royale. At the heart of the recipe, I created a core of rich vanilla custard flavors, building this out with a gentle nutmeg spice and finished it off with caramelized sugar notes, mimicking the delicious burnt sugar top of a crème brûlée."
The Spill Awards 2026 highlights the best spirits, cocktails, and drinks culture, with judges selecting their favorite bottles from 2025 releases. Eight expressions were chosen for their distinctive characteristics within their categories. Westland Distillery's Garryana 10, an American Single Malt aged in rare Quercus garryana oak native to the Pacific Northwest, stands out for its complexity and nuance developed over ten years in cask. Compass Box's Brûlée Royale, a limited-edition blend inspired by desserts, features grilled peach, candied caramel apple, vanilla custard, and subtle smoke notes, designed to recreate crème brûlée in whisky form. A Speyside distillery release, initially tried in 2024, became available on American shelves in 2025.
