In the Dominican Republic, Summer Calls for a Santo Libre
Briefly

The Santo Libre is a popular cocktail in Santo Domingo, combining rum, 7UP, and lime, believed to be a local adaptation of the Cuba Libre. Bartender Darnell Holguin indicates that the drink has a deeper history, noting that its roots trace back to the establishment of El Draque, considered one of the world's first cocktails. This historical drink, developed by Sir Francis Drake in the 16th century, integrated rum, sugarcane, and lime juice for medicinal purposes, showcasing the longstanding connection between local ingredients and cocktail culture in the Caribbean.
"None of us ever called it that, it was just Brugal y 7UP or ron y 7UP. The Santo Libre is much older than its name," says Darnell Holguin.
The Santo Libre combines a trio of flavors that have anchored mixed drinks for over 400 years: sugar, rum and lime.
Many consider El Draque, which combined sugarcane, rum, and lime juice, the first cocktail; it's possible Drake took a swig right there in Parque Colón.
The name might be new, but the Santo Libre combines a trio of flavors that have anchored mixed drinks for over 400 years.
