Dayan Viciedo Retires
Dayán Viciedo is retiring after playing his final game with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in Nippon Professional Baseball. He defected from Cuba in March 2008 and became a free agent in November 2008. He signed a four-year, $10MM contract with the Chicago White Sox in December 2008. After time in Double-A and Triple-A, he debuted in June 2010 at age 21. His best major league season came in 2012, when he hit 25 home runs with a .255/.300/.444 line and a 98 wRC+ as the primary left fielder. Production remained similar in 2013, but 2014 declined with a 90 wRC+ and poor defense. He was designated for assignment in 2015, later played in multiple organizations on minor league deals, and never returned to the majors. His career batting line finished at .254/.298/.424 with 66 home runs.
"The 2014 season was a bigger drop-off. Viciedo hit 21 home runs, but his overall line of .231/.281/.405 was good for just a 90 wRC+. In addition, his once serviceable defense had become a liability, with FanGraphs having Viciedo at -15 DRS between the outfield corners. Chicago avoided arbitration with Viciedo on a $4.4MM deal in January 2015 but designated him for assignment that same month."
